Is it okay to read books below your reading level?
There are benefits to reading books at different levels: When children read books below their reading level, it can help them build confidence and fluency as they work to automatically read the words on the page.
The higher the score, the easier the content is to read. Scores from 90 to 100 are typically easy for 5th graders to understand, while scores between 0 and 30 indicate you need a college degree (or industry expertise) to understand content.
Without a doubt, reading levels are an important part of a comprehensive reading assessment. A reading-level assessment is one way to measure a student's level of decoding and comprehension.
The Reading Level provides a supplemental measurement that considers the individual child. With this information, parents and teachers are able to help choose well-fitting books that give the reader just the right amount of challenge.
Most of the time, children fall behind on reading levels because they haven't found books that they're interested in, and can become frustrated with the reading process.
A Bad, Bad Day (Scholastic Reader, Level 1)
This was a sad but true story of what happens in schools today, totally would not recommend this for my students as they are not at the maturity level to read this (4th grade), but definitely would recommend for 6th-8th grade students.
A variety of cognitive and behavioral skills do relate to early reading–but these tend not to correlate in any significant way with intelligence.
The average American is considered to have a readability level equivalent to a 7th/8th grader (12 to 14 years old). This level is actively used as a benchmark for written guidelines in the medical industry.
It increases intelligence.
Exposure to vocabulary through reading (particularly reading children's books) not only leads to higher score on reading tests, but also higher scores on general tests of intelligence for children. Plus, stronger early reading skills may mean higher intelligence later in life.
Can I improve my reading level?
One of the most effective ways to build your skills is to practice. Developing your reading skills will ultimately take practice, and you can set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day to read.
Read all the time
The more students read, the more likely they will see their reading levels go up. Make reading something the student does as often as possible. In the classroom, for example, reading should not be limited to language arts or silent reading time.
Students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not. The more elementary-aged students read outside of school, the higher they scored on reading achievement tests.
Thirty-seven percent of fourth-grade students performed below the NAEP Basic level in 2022, which was 4 percentage points higher compared to 2019 and not significantly different from 1992.
Work with your daughter's teacher to learn exactly at what level she is reading. Then, go to the library and load up on books written at that level and below. Provide her with time each day to read and reread those below reading level books. You'll want to build up her confidence and fluency with those books.
A student's reading status is “one or more years below grade level” if the student's Instructional Reading Level (IRL) falls 1.1 or more years below the Grade Placement score. Determining a student's reading status is a three-step process.

The higher the Lexile measure, the higher the student's reading level. The reader's Lexile Framework works in intervals of five with 5L being the lowest. The highest possible measure is 2000L. Anything below 5L is assessed as a BR or Beginning Reader.

In the 6th grade, higher performers should be looking to achieve Lexile scores of around 1000L by the end of the year, with the average scores being over 665L. Yearly growth in the 6th grade falls under 100L typically, with expected growth at 1.7L per week.
What reading level is 1?
Level 1: BEGINNING READING. Short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own.
Range of Typical reading Levels in First Grade
In the fall, first graders typically independently read at a Level 4. By the end of first grade, a typical first grader will independently read at Level 16. It is important to note that some students may have DRA scores that are above or below the grade-level expectation.
Children who are reading fluently before beginning first grade are likely to be perceived by both parents and teachers as intellectually gifted. This precocious mastery of a complex skill certainly merits the label “gifted” and calls for differentiated programming.
This means they can go grocery shopping with a shopping list, read the labels on boxes and cans and read basic instructions, Even minimal reading skills can lead to a more independent life and improved job opportunities. We know that IQ does not predict a child's ability to read.
When it comes to published studies, there is no recognized connection between speed reading and IQ or intelligence. If anything, the correlation is not strong enough for it to be considered factual.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the United States have prose literacy below the 6th-grade level.
National Average for Lexile
According to national studies, the typical 9th grader should score on Lexile between 855L and 1165L over the course of the year.
Highest Literacy Rates
New Hampshire has the highest literacy rate in the US, with a rate of 88.5%. Alaska has the second highest literacy rate, at 87.3%, and Vermont is the third state with the highest literacy rate, at 87.2%.
During reading, poor readers may have difficulty decoding, and so have difficulty reading the words of their texts accurately. In addition, some poor readers read too slowly, or lack fluency.
Readability is a quality of your writing. If the readability of your text is high, people will be able to understand your sentences easily. If the readability is low, people still might understand what you're saying, but it's likely to be a draining experience.
